The Institute of Communication Studies is a leading research organization in the field of journalism and media studies, public relations and corporate communications. Our mission is to contribute towards strengthening of Macedonian democracy by working with media, civil society and public institutions, educating a critical public that will ask for greater transparency and accountability through engagement in the policy creation process.

Three awards with the stamp of ICS on the SEMM climate change contest

The story “Air pollution in Macedonia takes 5,000 lives a year as if we were at war” won the first prize in the competition for the best journalistic stories and photography on the topic “Facts and disinformation about climate change”, published in the period May 2024/April 2025, awarded by the Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia.

The awarded journalists Mirjana Mirčevska Jovanović, Sunčica Nikoloska and Pelagia Mladenovska, with the help of ICS, participated in the summer school for investigative journalism that took place in August 2024 in Riga, with a focus on climate change and pollution, after which they produced the research in Macedonia, which was published on the DOMA platform.

The second prize went to the story “The Macedonian pine is in menopause!? – How to save the pine?“, published on TV Terra and produced as part of the environmental journalism workshop conducted by ICS.

The series “Thirsty Macedonia” published on the DOMA platform, consisting of three video stories about the consequences of climate change in Strumica, Prespa and Tikves, also received a commendation. The authors are journalist Katerina Topalova Dejanovska, cameramen Ivan Popović and Ljubomir Domazaetov, and editor Majda Bošnjak Atanasovska.

All awarded stories were produced within the framework of the “Use Facts” project, funded by the Government of the United Kingdom, with the support of the British Embassy in Skopje.
