Petition to save the most endangered butterfly in Europe: Macedonian Grayling
The Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) is launching a petition to include the Macedonian Greyling (Pseudochazara cingovskii) in Annex 1 of the CITES Convention, in order to prevent its extinction due to illegal international trade.
This critically endangered and endemic butterfly species lives only in the limestone areas of the Pletvar Pass. With a habitat of less than 10 km², it is at high risk of extinction, especially driven by the demand from insect collectors.
IKS and the German organization Pro Wildlife have sent a letter to the Macedonian institutions, requesting that the country formally submits a proposal to CITES no later than June 27, ahead of the Conference of the Parties (CoP20), which will be held in Samarkand from November 25 to December 5, 2025.
Including this species in Annex 1 of the CITES Convention will allow for:
- A ban on international trade
- Support for national and border controls
- Raising awareness for the protection of the species globally
