Journalists Learn New Techniques for Investigating Environmental Topics

How to turn raw data into impactful stories that raise awareness about pressing environmental issues. This was the focus of a workshop titled “From Data to Impact: Techniques and Tools for Environmental Journalism”, held on January 24 in Skopje. A group of 18 journalists from various media outlets honed their investigative skills during the training, which was led by Agnes Bridge Walton, an Emmy Award-winning journalist specializing in environmental reporting.

Participants learned techniques for environmental investigative journalism by working in teams to identify an environmental story as a case study they worked on. They practiced creating stakeholder and source maps, collecting and analyzing environmental data using modern tools, and distinguishing between genuine progress and manipulative tactics known as “greenwashing”. The workshop concluded with a session on visualizing and presenting environmental stories, where journalists developed storytelling techniques and planned powerful audiovisual materials designed to capture public attention.

The workshop was organized by the Institute of Communication Studies as part of the “Use Facts” project, supported by the British Embassy in Skopje.
