International Higher Education Symposium organized by the Institute of Communication Studies and IREX “Keeping Up the Pace: Media Literacy Education in an Accelerating Age”

New technologies and digital media shape today’s world, and affect our democracies and our societies. As much as they have created opportunities, they have also caused threats to the way we think about information, politics, and relationships. In previous decades, media literacy and media education mostly emphasized critical thinking, the need to understand how information is created and how media outlets are organized. But, with the development of technology and social media platforms, the patterns of both media creation and media consumption have been muddled.

Can media education help us to keep up with the pace of technology development? Or is university education doomed to be always one (or several) steps behind? How has the development of technology and digital media consumption redefined media education? Is media education a remedy for manipulation, disinformation, and online exploitation? What should be the subject of research and analysis in the sphere of media education? How to translate research results into education practice? What educational competencies should be developed?

Join us in discussing these matters during the two-day virtual event on February 3 – 4, 2022 starting at 11:00 am (CEST).

This symposium will bring together academics, practitioners, and young researchers from the USA, EU, and the Western Balkans, to discuss media literacy and media education. Through a discussion of their insights and experience, panelists will highlight different approaches to studying key digital media literacy issues, how media literacy impacts society, as well as the role of media literacy in promoting civic engagement and digital citizenship.
