EJTA set out new guidelines for ethical use of AI in journalism & journalism education
The European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) has published the first set of recommendations for the use of artificial intelligence in journalism education, and the Institute of Communication Studies (ICS), as a member of the association, took an active part in their development. About 20 recognized European journalism schools were involved in the development of the Recommendations for Integrating AI in Journalism Teaching in order to set educational frameworks around the correct, responsible, transparent and ethical use of artificial intelligence tools in formal education.
The guidelines are intended to motivate teachers, professors, but also students to focus their attention on critical thinking and the reasonable use of AI tools and to build a system of transparency and openness in their use in the educational system. The association does not recommend punishing or reducing the use of AI to the same level as academic fraud or plagiarism, rather provide an open space for discussion and debate on the ways and manners in which AI tools can be used in teaching.
Artificial intelligence, with all its advantages and disadvantages, is here to stay and it is especially important to build clear and decisive rules of the game. But it is also important to devote attention, time and resources to creating ways in which the use of AI will advance or facilitate education. The main message of this set of recommendations is that we must prepare future journalists for the new media reality.
