Digital Monitoring Platform of the National Hydrometeorological Service for Surface-Water Quality
Public inspection and regular monitoring of the quality and pollution of rivers in Macedonia is enabled by the digital monitoring platform of the National Hydrometeorological Service (NHMS), which was developed as part of the “Clear it Up” campaign and which was publicly presented today.
NHMS monitoring data are extremely important for the assessment of changes in rivers due to intensive disposal of waste, wastewater, pesticides and other pollutants from households, agriculture and industry into river waters. The purpose of this type of monitoring is to provide information on the status of water bodies, but also to provide data for creating justified, sustainable and effective policies for water use and protection.
Thus, the digital monitoring platform will improve the system for collection and transfer of data from the NHMS monitoring, providing a public assessment of the biological, physical, chemical, morphological and ecological characteristics of water bodies in different river basins, as well as possible negative impacts from natural conditions and human activities.
The platform will provide free and easy access for the public and for inspection services to the data from the system, without special requirements and procedures.
This will also provide a coherent and comprehensive review of the data from the measurements used for monitoring and assessment of surface water quality in our country and for designing efficient and effective monitoring programs.
The NHMS Digital Monitoring Platform is available in Macedonian, Albanian and English language at www.waterquality.uhmr.gov.mk.
The “Clear it Up” advocacy and lobbying campaign is implemented by the Institute of Communication Studies and is funded by the British Embassy in Skopje.
