Economic Channels of Foreign Influence in North Macedonia – Case Study
This case study is asking the following question: Are there cases in Macedonia where foreign investments and strategic partnerships have enabled economic and political influence in the country, and what consequences do these cases have for the democratic governance?
The analysis relies heavily on open source reporting and analytical studies including media re ports and research (BBC Macedonian, Deutsche Welle, Meta.mk, Balkan Insight), academic stud ies (ResearchGate, Lund University, CEPA), policy documents (European Commission, European Parliament), audit reports (State Audit Office of North Macedonia), analyses by NGOs: Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” – Skopje (IDSCS), German Marshall Fund (GMF), Konrad Adenau er Foundation, International Crisis Group. The focus of this analysis is on four crucial investment cases in large infrastructure and energy projects:
- Privatization of the OKTA refinery.
- Construction of a gas pipeline network linked to the Russian clearing debt.
- Highways financed by China (Miladinovci–Shtip and Kichevo–Ohrid).
- The projects from Corridors 8 and 10e implemented by the Bechtel and Enka Consortium
