The Institute of Communication Studies is a leading research organization in the field of journalism and media studies, public relations and corporate communications. Our mission is to contribute towards strengthening of Macedonian democracy by working with media, civil society and public institutions, educating a critical public that will ask for greater transparency and accountability through engagement in the policy creation process.

Media Literacy in an Age of Overabundance: Creating a MIL Coalition (MAMIL)

Aim of the project

The main goal of the project was to create a coalition of media and civil society organizations that will jointly carry out activities aimed at promoting media and information literacy (MIL) in Macedonia.

Results

The benefits of the coalition’s work have been multiple: empowering citizens to better understand the information they consume on a daily basis and to become actively involved in the public sphere and the policy-making process; allow the media to adequately carry out their ideal role as guardians of society and the public interest.

The SJPR (leader), in partnership with the Media Diversity Institute from London and the daily newspaper Nova Makedonija.

Activities that were realized

With the awarding of grants to eight civil society organizations, the Coalition for Media Literacy was established, consisting of the following organizations: Association of Citizens for Support of Persons with Rare Disease Wilson in cooperation with Sakamdakazam.mk; Association for Promotion and Development of Inclusive Society in cooperation with TV Plus Kumanovo; Association for Media and Communication Culture and Civil Rights “Reformator” in cooperation with 24 Vesti Skopje; Coalition for Sexual and Health Rights of Marginalized Communities in Cooperation with TV 21; Macedonian Institute for European Studies in collaboration with Radio Urban FM; Youth Cultural Center Bitola in cooperation with Terra TV Bitola; National Youth Council of Macedonia in cooperation with Radio YEF; Special Olympics Macedonia in cooperation with Macedonian Television.

Within the project, activities were carried out to promote media literacy among high school students by organizing workshops on media literacy in high schools and by publishing the monthly high school newspaper “Medium”.

An analysis was published: “Media Literacy in Macedonia: the missing link for active citizenship” and “Media Literacy Handbook”. Within the project, a Media Day was held every year.
